FAQs for Adding a Location

Why should I list my property in the film locations database?

Additional Revenue
Film production can be a new source of income for you or your business. Location fees are negotiable and typically range from a few hundred dollars per day to several thousand dollars per day, depending on the project.

Promotional and Tourism Value
For businesses, hosting a film shoot can increase visibility. Local media often shares where filming is taking place, and successful films can draw visitors interested in seeing filming locations in person.

Supporting the Local Economy
Even small productions spend money locally on catering, lodging, transportation, and supplies. Productions also hire local actors, crew members, and skilled workers across many industries.

Strengthening York County as a Film-Friendly Region
Film productions need options. Even if your property is not selected, listing it helps demonstrate that York County is welcoming and well-equipped for film production.

It Can Be a Fun Experience
Hosting a film shoot can be exciting and educational. Many property owners enjoy seeing the filmmaking process up close and take pride in being part of a production.

What do I need to submit my property?

To list your property, you will need:

  • At least one photo

  • A detailed description of the property

If known, include architectural style, approximate age of buildings, acreage, and any unique features. Detailed listings are more searchable and more appealing to producers.

How many pictures should I submit?

There is no limit. If your property includes multiple buildings, large outdoor areas, or distinctive features, include photos of each.

How much should I charge for the use of my property?

There is no fixed rate. A common starting point is your monthly mortgage or rent divided by the number of filming days.

Things to consider include:

  • Production budget: Budgets range widely, from small independent projects to major studio productions.

  • Convenience: Consider how filming may affect your schedule or business operations.

  • Alternative compensation: Some owners are open to non-monetary compensation such as promotional content, appearances, or other creative opportunities.

What happens if a movie or TV show is interested in filming on my property?

Step 1: Inquiry
If a producer is interested, the Pennsylvania Film Office will facilitate the initial connection.

Step 2: Location Scouting
Members of the production team may visit your property to assess creative and logistical needs.

Step 3: Negotiation
Both parties agree on fees, rules, restrictions, and scheduling.

Step 4: Preparation
If preparation or temporary changes are needed, they are handled by the production according to agreed guidelines.

Step 5: Filming
Filming can be fast-paced and busy. Owners are sometimes asked to remain off-site or out of the filming area.

Step 6: Wrap
After filming, the production is responsible for restoring the property to its original condition.

How will my property be protected as a filming location?

Production Insurance
Productions typically carry insurance to cover potential damage. You may request a certificate of insurance.

Security Deposit
When appropriate, a refundable security deposit can be negotiated to provide additional protection.
